Tackling Salinity

Salinity and rising watertables have widely impacted farming practices across Australia (NSW DPI Salt Bag Manual). In our region, the Murray Catchment Action Plan identifies managing for productive and healthy soils as a priority and the Salinity hazard report for Catchment Action Plan identifies some areas within West Hume Landcare region as a high and very high salinity hazard. To tackle this issue, it is essential to identify and measure the impacts of salinity through monitoring and supply our landholders with the knowledge of salinity best management practices.

Linking Land Management, Dryland Salinity and Soil Health in the Eastern Murray Catchment (2025-2028)

This project will continue and build upon the great work that West Hume Landcare has done on dryland salinity since the group was formed in 1989, including the most recent project Tackling Salinity in the West Hume Landcare region (2022-2024)

This project combines on-ground monitoring, practical demonstrations and research to improve understanding of:

  • How land use changes influence groundwater movement and salinity expression;

  • The impact of salinity on soil health and productivity;

  • Practical land management actions that can mitigate salinity’s effects.

Specific aims of the project are:

  • Continue groundwater height and salinity monitoring throughout West Hume Landcare and extend the monitoring into the Holbrook Landcare Network

  • Conduct soil tests and soil health assessments across a range of saline and non-saline sites to assess saline impact on soil health.

  • Establish 3 Demonstration sites (2 WHL, 1 HLN) to demonstrate soil health remediation techniques and ameliorants in saline soils to improve soil health and plant productivity

  • Assess land use and vegetation cover change in the region since 1990s

  • Establish where possible links between changed land use and groundwater dynamics

  • Increase capacity of Landcare staff to assess land use change using GIS technology

  • Enhance capacity of land holders and NRM staff to understand and manage dryland salinity through a series of field days and workshops
