Allan Nicholson, Principal Salinity Officer with the NSW DCCEEW Basin Salinity Program, highlighted the importance of data collection in non-irrigated regions: “Filling the gap in groundwater data is an issue across the NSW Murray Darling Basin, as scant groundwater height and salinity information is being collected outside irrigation and production areas”. West Hume Landcare is uniquely positioned for this work, with one of the most extensive groundwater monitoring datasets in a non-irrigated region, dating back to the early 1990s. “Our landholders have a long-standing commitment to monitoring salinity with a large network of piezometers. Each session was hosted by a group member, enabling other participants the opportunity to “look over the back fence” and observe what was working (and what wasn’t) on local farms. The role of the facilitator was vital in creating a friendly, safe space for sharing. Our facilitator was also a local landholder which made him a trusted advisor to the group. In our region, the Murray Catchment Action Plan identifies managing for productive and healthy soils as a priority and the Salinity hazard report for Catchment Action Plan identifies some areas within West Hume Landcare region as a high and very high salinity hazard. When they find a suitable nest that has been occupied by a native bird, they will kill the chicks or destroy the eggs, sometimes just to take over an extra nesting hollow they won’t even use. Residentially, they are known to eat from bins, pet bowls or any food scraps they can find, as well as build untidy nest on roofs which leads to fire hazards and the attraction of mice. If groundwater rises to within 2 metres of the soil surface, water can rise by capillary action to the surface. When this happens, the water can bring salt into the root zone and when the water evaporates at the soil surface, concentrated salts are left behind.
